The following is NOT a quote of death and despair, but rather a quote of hope and life. 

The moment we start playing with dolls as children is the moment we begin fantasizing about parenthood and auditioning for the role. For some of us, it becomes our single unwavering mission in life that will define our identity for the rest of our lives. Estrangement decimates the only psyche we have ever known, a psyche based on a fantasy that would never fully materialize under the best conditions. Estrangement not only destroys our childhood innocence and memories of playing with dolls, but also our core definition of self. This failed and flawed ideation can happen to both estranged mothers and fathers though traditional American doll culture has been largely reserved for girls.  Who knew that perhaps the greatest toy of all time created to teach us how to take responsible for another might also be the formative tool that makes some estranged parents want to take their own lives?
