Empathic Estrangement
Estrangement leaves family members trapped in darkness with the feeling that walls are falling down all around them. This physical and emotional devastation is quite common during estrangement. Estranged family members often ask themselves the question: How Did This Happen To Me?
Empathic Estrangement is a counseling communication tool or strategy for therapists and coaches to use with estranged family members. This guided communication tool is based on building mutual empathy and compassion. The strategy involves direct and private communication by the person who is distancing him or herself emotionally and/or physically to the estranged family member. The communication to the estranged can be via text, email, voicemail, letter, etc. provided it is both private and communicated directly from the person who is distancing him/herself. The goal is to provide some level of clarity and closure, temporary or permanent, for both parties. It will also give the estranged family members more motivation to focus on their own personal developmental journey during the period of estrangement. Also, Empathic Estrangement preserves the dignity needed for both parties in the event there is a reconciliation.
